Thailand: Bangkok, Phuket, Phi Phi Islands

The Ultimate 12-Day Thailand Travel Guide: Where to Stay, What to Do, & What to Pack

Chad got us tickets to Thailand in January for my birthday last year, and it was truly the trip of a lifetime! Thailand is a dream destination for anyone seeking stunning beaches, vibrant cities, delicious street food, and rich cultural experiences. We spent 12 unforgettable days in Thailand, exploring Bangkok, Phuket, and the Phi Phi Islands. Here’s our ultimate travel guide, including must-visit spots, what to pack, and where to stay for an incredible adventure.

Where We Stayed in Thailand

Bangkok (First Stay) – ASAI Bangkok Chinatown

Located in the heart of Chinatown, ASAI Bangkok is a trendy boutique hotel perfect for immersing yourself in the city's rich history and street food scene.

Patong, Phuket – Buasri Boutique Patong

This charming boutique hotel offers a relaxing escape while still being close to the bustling nightlife and beautiful beaches.

Phi Phi Islands – Phi Phi Princess Resort

A beachfront paradise, this resort boasts breathtaking views, direct beach access, and an infinity pool. We stayed here through an Airbnb booking, and the room was okay, but expect to have an uncomfortable mattress here.

Bangkok (Last Night) – Siam Mandarina

Our favorite stay of the trip, this luxurious hotel provided the perfect way to unwind before heading home.

What to Do in Thailand

Bangkok – 3 Nights

  • Visit Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) – One of Bangkok’s most famous temples, home to the massive golden Reclining Buddha.

  • Explore the Street Markets – We tried exotic street food, including skewers, mango sticky rice, squid, and Chad ate a live shrimp salad!

  • Tuk-Tuk Rides – Zipping through the chaotic streets in a tuk-tuk was both thrilling and efficient! The driving over there is insane, so I would recommend getting rides with a local driver.

  • Shop at Siam Paragon & MBK Mall – From designer brands to budget-friendly finds, shopping in Bangkok is next-level.

  • Experience the Night Markets – We browsed through handcrafted souvenirs, clothing, and delicious late-night snacks.

  • A Little Setback – I had one rough day, likely due to eating squid or getting carsick, but I bounced back quickly!

Phuket (Patong) – 3 Nights

  • Green Elephant Sanctuary Park – An ethical and heartwarming experience where we fed, bathed, and learned about rescued elephants. Truly one of the coolest days OF MY LIFE.

  • Hit the Beach and Swim in the Ocean - Hike down to a secluded beach in Patong for some swimming and see some friendly stray dogs. Just beware of rabies here, and don’t get TOO friendly.

  • Explore on Motorbikes – We rented motorbikes to explore hidden gems around Patong Beach and the surrounding areas. This is the best way to get around in Patong, and they rent out motorbikes on every corner. You will typically need to give them your Passport, which will be returned to you when you bring the bike back.

  • Cheap Massages – Perfect for relaxing after a long day of exploring, and they are available on almost every street!

Phi Phi Islands – 3 Nights

  • Relax at the Beach & Pool – The turquoise waters and soft sand made for the ultimate island getaway.

  • Reggae Bar Muay Thai Fights – A unique experience where Chad decided to get in the ring—only to leave with a mild concussion…

  • Island-Hopping & Snorkeling Tour – We embarked on a full-day boat trip, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, spotting colorful fish, and getting very sunburnt.

  • Monkey Beach – We saw playful monkeys up close in their natural habitat. Again, beware of rabies. These monkeys are a bit aggressive FYI.

  • Attend a Ladyboy Show – Thailand’s ladyboy cabaret performances are full of glitz, glamour, and impressive choreography.

  • Tattoos? – Our friends got tattoos as a souvenir, but we decided to sit this one out.

Final Night in Bangkok – Siam Mandarina

We wrapped up our trip with a relaxing stay at the beautiful Siam Mandarina before heading home.
